WVB Recap:
The women's Avalanche opened the 2nd half of the season by hosting the Columbia Bible College (CBC) Bearcats. Their matchup was like their previous one which ended with a weekend split and some very exciting volleyball. Though they started off slow, finding themselves down 0-6, the Avs found their groove and won the 1st set. CBC pushed back and won the next 2 sets before the Avalanche found another gear, winning the 4th set and then the game in the 5th set in extra points. Ella Nichols led the Av's with 15 kills and 3 aces, Hannah Zurakowski picked up 12 digs and dished out 30 assists, and Daivan Scherman had 2 blocks.
On Saturday it was all CBC Bearcats apart from the 2nd set. CBC's offense had the Avs struggling and as the game went on CBC's serving clinched their win. The Avs are tied for the 4th and final playoff spot, making every game very important. Ella Nichols led the offense again with 13 kills, followed closely by Hannah Gray who pickup up 9 kills. Hannah Zurakowski had 28 assists, Stevie Friesen grabbed 10 digs, and Daivan Scherman had 4 blocks!
"We're working this 2nd half to take each game at a time and not look too far ahead." Said coach Bryan Fraser. "On Friday we battled against a strong CBC team and ended up winning 2 more points than them. It was super close! On Saturday we lacked court awareness and didn't adapt to CBC's offense very well. We seemed a bit behind the play for periods which made it hard for us to generate break points. We know what we need to get better at for this next weekend and the girl's will be 100% ready for Capilano. I'm excited for the week."
