WVB Recap:
On Friday November 22nd the women's Avalanche faced off against the #6 team in the country, the Camosun Chargers. The Av's played a gritty style of volleyball and seemed to consistently find ways to extend rallies and win big points on their way to winning the game 3 sets to 1. Rylee Bell and Ella Nichols once again led the way offensively with 11 and 14 points respectively. Hannah Zurakowski ran a seemingly flawless game, finishing with 27 assists, 2 kills, 1 block, 10 digs, and 1 service ace.
"We came into this weekend feeling very prepared for Camosun," said coach Bryan Fraser. "We knew they were a strong team, and where they typically find success. I think on Friday night we did a great job forcing them to look at other options to score points. We also served and passed quite well and played solid defense. I really liked how Hannah Zurakowski orchestrated our offense and kept Camosun's blockers guessing."
In the Saturday match, the Chargers got off to a great start, but the Av's never gave up and ended up stealing the first set through some incredible plays down the stretch. Camosun took the next three sets though the Avs hung in right to end of each. Ella Nichols and Kayla Brosok lead the way offensively with 20 points, and 11 points respectively. Stevie Friesen also played stellar at the libero position, passing 22 serves and picking up 13 digs.
"On Saturday we played with a slightly different lineup due to injuries." Fraser said. "Though we had a solid plan in place, we had a hard time adjusting to their OH's and struggled to pick up those extra digs that we're getting used to having. At times we played at a high level, but other times we were a bit behind the play and were too reactive. Camuson played great on Saturday and won the game but we still feel like if we had a bit more mental capacity, we could have given ourselves a chance to win."
The Avalanche will be on the road this week, taking on the Capilano Blues on November 29 & 30 to close out the 1st half of the 2024/25 season.
