Men's Volleyball Avalanche Report: Week 2

Men's Volleyball Avalanche Report: Week 2

MVB Recap:

College of the Rockies' Avalanche men's volleyball program secured their first road win of the PACWEST season with a 3-0 sweep over the CBC Bearcats in Abbotsford. In a match that featured inconsistent serve and pass from both sides, Diego Policarpo continued his offensive rampage with 18 points in 3 sets (17 kills, 1 ace). Running the offence, Boston Thiessen had 22 assists while defensively Albert Francisco led the Avs with 8 digs.

"This match was interesting in the fact that I didn't think we served or passed very well, but it felt like we were in control the whole way, mostly due to Diego Policarpo's defense and transition play," said coach Cisco Farrero. "We struggled to get our middle attack going, but I thought we made some good decisions in high ball and then in the 3rd set we were able to get ourselves going on more facets of the game."

On Saturday night the Avs finished off the weekend sweep with a 3-1 win over the solid Bearcats squad. A much higher energy and well-executed match than Friday's weekend opener, the Avs had several significant performances. Offensively Diego Policarpo once again led the Avs with 25 points (24 kills, 1 block) but Jack Schmeiss (6 kills, 2 blocks, 1 ace), Jace Wilson (6 kills, 4 aces) and Albert Francisco (8 kills, 2 aces, 1 block) all stepped up their offensive contributions. Boston Thiessen totaled 44 assists and 2 kills from the setter position as the Avs ran their record to 4-0.

"Saturday was a much better overall match, CBC was better in all facets of the game, and we had to respond accordingly," Farrero said. "I thought our offence was the most efficient it's been all season, and we needed every point to get this win. Obviously, Diego was spectacular once again, but I loved our cohesion throughout the match and how we were able to get offence from several different sources. Heading home into our bye week with 4 wins is huge for us. Our team feels good about our growth and is looking forward to continuing to push forward."
