COTR women’s Avalanche program signs talented middle blocker for the 2023/2024 season

College of the Rockies' women's Avalanche volleyball program has signed Daivan Scherman, a 5 ft. 11 in. middle blocker from Battleford, Saskatchewan for the 2023/2024 season.

Scherman was raised on a farm outside of Battleford, Saskatchewan and participated in a variety of sports growing up including dance, hockey, track, basketball, and volleyball.

Currently, she is a grade 12 student at North Battleford Comprehensive High School, where in 2021, she helped her team win a bronze medal at 5A Provincials. Scherman also earned a Team Sportsmanship award. The following year, she was named co-captain of the NBCHS Vikings. Scherman also played club volleyball with Battlefords Volleyball Club for five years before joining the U18 Huskie Volleyball Club Elite Team for her final club season.

"Joining the Avalanche was an easy decision after visiting the team," Scherman said. "I was met with a positive atmosphere full of supportive and kind individuals. The Avalanche team truly feels like a family. I'm excited to continue developing my game under Coach Fraser and his staff and I look forward to the opportunity of playing volleyball and studying while living in the Rocky Mountains."

While at the College, Sherman will balance her commitment to the team with studies in the College's Accounting diploma program.

"Daivan is a stellar addition to our 2023-24 roster, said women's coach Bryan Fraser.  "She has the ability to attack a really quick ball and is an excellent read blocker which is a skill that is rarely seen performed well at the club level. Her work ethic is second-to-none and with her fantastic volleyball IQ, I have no doubt that she's going to become a strong middle in the PACWEST. Academically, I am thrilled to be adding yet another motivated student with big academic goals to our program."

The College of the Rockies Avalanche volleyball program resumes competition the weekend of January 13 when the Avs welcome the Vancouver Island University's Mariners. The schedules for the women's and men's teams can be found on the Avalanche website.
