College of the Rockies’ Avalanche add Alberta middle blocker

College of the Rockies women's Avalanche volleyball team has signed Ryan Wiebe, a 5 ft 11 in. middle blocker from Beaverlodge, Alberta for the 2021/2022 season.

Wiebe, who graduated in 2020 at Beaverlodge Regional High School, began playing volleyball at the age of 12, and was part of the Wolves Volleyball Club (WVBC) for six years at the division 1 level. She has competed on the varsity girl's team in high school three years, in the positions of middle, right side and setter.

During her time as a starter on Wolves, her team has accomplished 3rd place at Provincials in both 2016 and 2017. In her u17 and u18 club years, the Wolves earned back to back provincial championships. Though volleyball was Wiebe's primary focus, she also participated in most other school sports while also finding time to play guitar and pursue art during her spare time.

"Ryan has the potential to become a strong middle in the PACWEST," said Bryan Fraser, women's Avalanche coach. "She is very athletic and offensively she can make herself available to attack in a variety of situations. Academically she has found a program that suits her passions and I believe she is going to fit very nicely into what our program is working towards. I am looking forward to working with such a strong athlete."

Wiebe will be enrolling in the College's Fine Arts program.

"I chose College of the Rockies because I wanted the chance to experience life away from home in a new environment with different people," she said. "After talking with Bryan a few times, I knew I made a great choice. This opportunity allows me to pursue my volleyball career and still be able to focus on my education. I am beyond excited to attend College of the Rockies and have my new teammates and coaches help me grow not only as an athlete but as a person!"

All PACWEST intercollegiate competition was suspended during the 2020/21 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. College of the Rockies' Avalanche players continue to train in anticipation of the return of competitive action.
