College of the Rockies Avalanche sign Kelowna outside hitter

College of the Rockies' women's Avalanche volleyball program has signed Rose Howard, a five ft. 9 in. outside hitter from Kelowna, B.C.

Howard, a grade 12 student at Okanagan Mission Secondary school, began playing volleyball in grade five but did not become a serious player until ninth grade. She went on to make the Kamloops Volleyball Association's High Performance Team and committed herself to traveling 45 minutes to practice, three times a week.  She also was named 2nd Team All-Star while playing for her high school team, which earned sixth place at Provincials in her senior year.

"Rose is a very athletic and gritty player," said Bryan Fraser, women's Avalanche coach. "She works extremely hard, and I believe she can have a bright future at the College, both on the court and in her studies. I'm looking forward to working with her next season."

While at the College, Howard will be enrolled in University Arts and Sciences. She hopes to eventually earn a Bachelor of Social Work.

The Avalanche men's and women's volleyball teams will host Vancouver Island University (January 24 and 25) and University of the Fraser Valley (February 7 and 8) to close out the regular season.
