College of the Rockies’ women’s volleyball Athlete of the Week is 2nd year Libero Lauren Penney.
In the last weekend of regular season play, Lauren and the Avalanche took on the #15 ranked team in the country, the Capilano Blues. On Friday, she provided a huge spark coming off the bench and kept the team within striking distance in each of the 4 sets. Despite the 1-3 loss for the Avalanche, Lauren kept them in the game with 4 digs and 1 assist on the night.
Saturday turned out to be a different story for Penney and the Av’s. Lauren started the game and was a strong driving force for the defense picking up a career high 10 digs and adding 1 assist. Despite losing the first set, Lauren and her teammates rallied and won the next 3 sets to finish the season with a decisive win!
“Lauren has come so far in the past two years and this weekend she took advantage of her opportunity to perform in some tight games,” said coach Bryan Fraser. “She has been such an incredible teammate and when she’s on the floor there is a positive energy shift within the group. Lauren plays SO hard, and brings focus to every single point, which was very important this weekend for our team to play as well as they did.”
